How to work a performance-based question without losing marks

PBQs are scored on the state you leave the system in. The reported failures are rarely "did not know the command" - they are starting before reading the whole scenario, and submitting without checking.

  1. Read the entire scenario first. All of it. Starting early is what causes a missed requirement.
  2. Turn it into a checklist. A task worded as one sentence is usually three requirements, and the last one is rarely implied by the first two. Count them before you touch anything.
  3. Do the work. This is not where the marks are lost.
  4. Verify before submitting. Every topic in this track ends with a "Prove it" section for exactly this moment. If you cannot name the command that would show you did it, you have not finished.

CompTIA delivers PBQs as simulations, an approximation of a tool, or inside a virtual environment, which is a real machine. The difference decides whether you can leave one and come back, and CompTIA Network+ uses simulations only. So flagging a hard PBQ and returning to it is available to you, and CompTIA says your work is saved as you go and when you move to another item. Only SecurityX currently uses the virtual kind, where you are warned first and have to finish there and then.

Partial credit may be given, and scoring anticipates more than one valid approach. You do not have to find the one blessed command sequence; you have to leave the system in the state that was asked for. "May" is CompTIA's word and it is worth keeping: partial credit exists, and how it is apportioned is not published.

This practice exam has no PBQs, and cannot have. Simulating a firewall or a switch in a browser would be a different project, and a fake one would teach the wrong reflexes. What some items do instead is hand you the same artefact a technician would have, a real capture taken from the topic pages, and ask what it proves. That exercises the reading, which is most of a PBQ, and none of the clicking. The clicking is what the labs at the foot of each topic are for.

Rough clock: 2 to 3 minutes for a multiple-choice item, 5 to 10 for a PBQ, and keep the last ten minutes for whatever you flagged. That split is a working recommendation, not a CompTIA figure - they publish the question count and the duration, and how you divide them is yours.
